As an “expert” in social distancing, here are few recommendations to keep yourself sane. To make it easy, here’s a menu of what’s included:
Media
Podcasts
- Armchair Expert: I have learned a lot from this podcast, especially the experts on expert editions.
- My Dad Wrote A Porno: This LOL funny. The premise is the host’s dad wrote a self-published book and now he and his friends are reading it aloud.
- Serial: If you haven’t already jumped on the bandwagon, now’s the time.
- Unlocking Us with Brene Brown: This is coming soon, but I’m anticipating it’s going to be great.
- Life Will Be the Death of Me: Playing off her book (Life Will Be the Death of Me which is on my to-read list).
Comedy Specials
I’ve watched so many comedy specials, but here are the ones that stick out (and likely the ones I’ve watched more than once).
Netflix
- For a mix of comedians: The Comedy Lineup, The Standups, Comedians of the World (I’ve watched each of these twice).
- Ellen Degeneres’ Relatable: Funny, but not as funny as Here and Now.
- Iliza Schlesinger’s Elder Millennial, War Paint (also available on Prime Video), Confirmed Kills, Unveiled
- Katherine Ryan’s Glitter Room and In Trouble
- John Mulaney including New in Town, Kid Gorgeous, and The Comeback Kid
- Hasan Minhaj’s Homecoming King (and if you like his comedic presence, I highly recommend Patriot Act)
- Ryan Hamilton’s Happy Face: The relatability of contact lenses and slipping over the handlebars of your bike, he is the Jerry Seinfeld of my generation.
- Neil Brennan’s Three Mics: This is a healthy mix of reality and comedy.
- Russell Howard’s Recalibrate
- Jack Whitehall At Large
- Vir Das’ Abroad Understanding, For India, and Losing It
- Taylor Tomlinson’s Quarter-Life Crisis
- Trevor Noah including Son of Patricia and Afraid of the Dark
- Seth Meyers’ Lobby Baby
- Hannah Gatsby’s Nanette: While this is included in comedy, I want to call out that it’s not all laughs but an important special.
- Alice Fraser’s The Resistance: If you like Nanette, this is another good watch.
- Wanda Sykes’ Not Normal
- Chris Rock’s Tamborine
- Hello Privilege, It’s Me Chelsea: This is not necessarily a comedy special and more like a docu-series, but it’s still worth watching.
- Ali Wong’s Hard Knock Wife and Baby Cobra
- Leslie Jones’ Time Machine
- Nikki Glaser’s Bangin’: This is not for you if you don’t appreciate a little raunchy humor.
- Michelle Wolf’s Joke Show: Another where if you can’t appreciate some realism with a good laugh, you should skip this (don’t @ me).
Prime Video
- Ellen Degeneres’ Here and Now: This is a must-see. You’ll reference “oh, that’s not Nancy” and “give it, I got it” for years to come.
- Jim Gaffigan’s Quality Time
- Iliza Schlesinger’s War Paint (also available on Netflix)
TV
Netflix
- Queer Eye: Duh! Need I say more?
- Schitt’s Creek: I was late in jumping on the Schitt’s Creek bandwagon, but I binged this like I’ve never binged anything before because it is hilarious.
- Self Made: The most upsetting part of this show is that it is only four episodes.
- Once Day at a Time: It’s a real shame the next season isn’t being picked up by Netflix, but this is such a good-hearted series.
- Gilmore Girls
- Dating Around: This has similar vibes to Love Is Blind (with less drama).
- Patriot Act: After watching Hasan Minhaj’s Homecoming King, I was so happy when he came out with Patriot Act. It addresses topical issues with comedic commentary and I think that’s a health balance in this day-in-age.
- The Fix: In a lot of ways, this is similar to Patriot Act, but goes a step further in coming with creative solutions for solving today’s problems.
- Friends from College: Great cast. Unique content.
- Gossip Girl: If you were late in watching Gossip Girl like I was, it’s ok to go back and rewatch the iconic New York City lifestyles of teenagers. (Note: I asked my friend who grew up in NYC if this was depicted accurately and she said, “in some ways, yes, and in other ways, no” which in hindsight didn’t really answer my question.)
- Northern Rescue: This was a random find for me, and I’m not sure if the series will get picked up for a second season, but I very much enjoyed the family drama.
- Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal: Basically anything where Shonda Rhimes was involved, I’m watching.
- Mindhunter: The first season came out so long ago that when the second season finally arrived, I completely forgot what happened. This is for anyone who enjoys true crime.
- Instant Hotel: An Australian competition to crown a winner for best Airbnb (more or less).
- Selling Sunset: This is reality TV for real estate.
Hulu
- Parenthood: If you haven’t already watched this family drama, now is the time. It’s loosely based off the movie with Steve Martin.
- The Mindy Project
- Four Weddings and A Funeral: I have watched this short series through 2x. It’s similar to Love Actually, but is special all on its own.
- How I Met Your Mother: I did not like how this series ended, but everything leading up to it is worthwhile.
- The OC: And if you’re interested in podcasts, I recommend listening to The OCD.
- One Tree Hill: Another TV series that I didn’t watch until recently, I love Sophia Bush and for that alone, I will rewatch this series over and over.
- Will & Grace
- Golden Girls: Sophia, Dorothy, Blanche, and Rose are a hoot!
- For ongoing shows, here are a few that you can catch up on:
- Drama: A Million Little Things, This is Us, Almost Family
- Comedies: Younger, Single Parents, Bless This Mess
And, for the time being, they are offering HBO shows like Big Little Lies and Veep.
Prime Video
Note: Not all of these are necessarily included with your Prime membership but are available for purchase.
- The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel: I love this show for its wittiness, costumes, and uniqueness.
- Lie to Me: Basically, a show about a human lie detector.
- What I Like About You: If you have a sister, this is a must-watch. I dreamed of living a life like Val and Holly.
- House of Lies: Kristen Bell has such range. From a Disney princess to the spin of consulting, this is not for the easily offended.
- Sex and the City
- Ellen: Before Ellen Degeneres became a part of our every day afternoons, she had her own sitcom and it is funny.
Movies
I’ve included fewer movies because I feel like people know what they’re looking for when it comes to what they want to watch for a movie day/night.
Netflix
- Sleepover: This is such a classic teenage girl movie.
- Burlesque: While this movie didn’t get the best reviews when it originally came out in theaters, it includes Julianne Hough (a girl crush of mine) in addition to Kristen Bell (again, this lady has such range!).
- The Ugly Truth
- The Perfect Date
- New York Minute
- Death at a Funeral: I remember laughing out loud in the theater the first time I saw this movie (thanks, James Marsden).
- Country Strong: Just like A Star Is Born, but better (sorry!).
- Life As We Know It
- He’s Just Not That Into You
- Valentine’s Day
- Failure to Launch
- Hitch (also available on Hulu)
- Julie & Julia
- Ghost of Girlfriends Past
- The Bounty Hunter: I’ll watch anything with Jennifer Aniston
- Monster-In-Law
- P.S. I Love You
- Yes Man
- A Cinderella Story
Brene Brown’s Call to Courage doesn’t really fit into any of my media categories but I still want to make sure it is included.
Hulu
- The Female Brain
- Morning Glory
- No Strings Attached (also available on Prime Video)
- Book Club
- Instant Family (also available on Prime Video)
- Leap Year
- Where’d You Go, Bernadette
- Bridget Jones Diary, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, Bridget Jones Baby
- My Best Friend’s Wedding
- Hitch (also available on Netflix)
- Up in the Air
Prime Video
- Late Night
- No Strings Attached (also available on Hulu)
- The Wedding Year
- Instant Family (also available on Hulu)
- Home Again
Books
Note: If you are a Prime member, you have access to thousands of free Kindle books through Prime Reading, so don’t feel obligated to go buy a bunch of books.
I have about 20 books sitting unread on my bookshelf, plus 140+ in my Kindle library. I’m planning to knock a few out over the new few weeks. The included books that I’ve read and enjoyed, in no particular order, that I would recommend.
Biographies & Memoirs
- Year of Yes by Shonda Rhimes: I read this book at the end of 2016. It is a big part of why I ended up moving to Seattle in March 2017.
- Educated by Tara Westover: This is an unbelievable true story. At times, it can be hard to read so I recommend also picking up something more lighthearted to after.
- Dear Madam President by Jennifer Palmieri: This is a quick read (one airplane ride), but highly recommend for anyone that has felt impacted by the 2016 election.
- Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? and Why Not Me? by Mindy Kaling: Even though Mindy Kaling blocked me on Twitter, I am still a fan of her writing (books and TV shows including The Mindy Project and Four Weddings and A Funeral).
- Everything by Ellen DeGeneres, including The Funny Thing Is…, and My Point…And I Do Have One, and Seriously…I’m Kidding. (Also, watch Here and Now, currently included with Prime Video and Relatable on Netflix.)
- I Can’t Make This Up by Kevin Hart
- Talking as Fast as I Can by Lauren Graham: If you liked Gilmore Girls and/or Parenthood, you’ll love this book.
- We’re Going to Need More Wine by Gabrielle Union: This had an unexpected ending that I really appreciated. I am also a fan of Gabrielle Union in her TV show, Being Mary Jane.
- The Last Black Unicorn by Tiffany Haddish: All I can say is, wow, this girl is resilient. If you don’t want to read her story, at least watch her episode of My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman.
- Bossy Pants by Tina Fey
Fiction
- Wish Me Home by Kay Bratt: This is one of my favorite books. If you have a sister, this is a must read.
- Where the Crawdad Sings by Delia Owens: If you liked Educated by Tara Westover, you’ll also love this book. While fiction instead of nonfiction, it has similar elements.
- Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman: I’ve never read anything like this book and and I loved it for that reason. And that’s all I’ll say to avoid any spoilers.
- The First Word by Isley Robson
Mystery, Thriller & Suspense
- Gone Girl, Sharp Objects, and Dark Places by Gillian Flynn: I recommend reading them in this order (even though that’s not the order in which they were published). I read the entirety of Gone Girl on one Christmas Day.
- Say You’re Sorry by Melinda Leigh
- Stillhouse Lake series by Rachel Caine: Think along the lines of Gone Girl.
- Dead Certain by Adam Mitzner: Like an episode of Law & Order: SVU
- The Girl On the Train by Paula Hawkins
- Luckiest Girl Alive by Jessica Knoll: I don’t think this book should be compared to Gone Girl or The Girl on the Train, and maybe that’s why the ratings fall short. This is a different kind of story, one that stems more out of historical events than the books its compared to.
Romance
- P.S. from Paris by Marc Levy: This is what I would describe as a romantic comedy, in book form.
- After You Left by Carol Mason
- The Letter, The Secret, and The Key by Kathryn Hughes
- The Everything series and All the Breaking Waves by Kerry Lonsdale: Kerry Lonsdale has a similar vibe to Nicholas Sparks, speaking of which…
- Everything by Nicholas Sparks (my favorites are A Bend in the Road, The Guardian, See Me, The Rescue)
- Matchmaking for Beginners by Maddie Dawson
- Me Before You by Jojo Moyes
The “50 Shades” Romance
- Just Say When by Kaylee Ryan
- All the Lies We Tell by Megan Hart
- Teach Me by Sophie Holloway: No where to be found on Amazon or Apple Books… (sorry!)
Science Fiction & Fantasy
- Harry Potter: The first book is included in Prime Reading!
- The Martian by Andy Weir: It took me a bit to get into this book, but once I did, it was a page-turner.
Young Adult
If you have kids or want a lighter read, here are a few of my favorite books from late elementary school into middle school.
- The Fault in Our Stars & Paper Towns by John Green
- If I Stay by Gayle Forman
- Ruby Holler by Sharon Creech: My all-time favorite book (and it seems everyone else’s given its 4.8/5 rating).
- Olive’s Ocean by Kevin Henkes: I loved this book. The book cover is etched into my mind because of how much I loved it.
- Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson: This is topical considering the state of the state.
- The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series by Ann Brashares
- Number the Stars by Lois Lowry
- Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo
- Holes by Louis Sachar
- A Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds: Technically categorized as young adult, it is a little dark, so fair warning.
Self-care
- Anxiety
- CBD: If you’re feeling a little anxious about everything that’s going on, I highly recommend investing in some non-THC CBD. My all-time favorite is from Dazey.
- Candles: A candle’s flame can help us feel calm and reduce stress. Two of my favorite scented candles are Chesapeake Bay Candle Scented Candle, Stillness + Purity (Rose Water) and Aromascape 3-Wick Scented Jar Candle, Lavender & Vanilla.
- Skin: I am a big fan of Formula 10.0.6 and especially their Skin-Calming Gel Mask. You can slap on a face mask and take care of laundry and dishes or enjoy a little meditation (you can use an app like Headspace). Dazey’s CBD Sugar Body Scrub is another skin favorite, along with their Green Tansy Facial Oil and Priming Moisturizer (this is not an #ad).
Activities
- Puzzles! I donated all my puzzles in my move back to Denver from Seattle, but I’ll be ordering a few from Amazon.
- Yard work: This may not sound very fun, but now’s the time to get this out of the way. I spent the day raking and feel very accomplished, albeit sore, and now I don’t have to worry about it come spring and summer gatherings.
- Unsubscribe: I know you’re thinking this seems counterintuitive advice to give as someone who sends email for a living, but “ghost” recipients actually hurt my numbers. Take this time to unsubscribe from the emails you haven’t opened or engaged with in a while.
- Working out: With fitness studios and gyms doing their part in closing, you can invest in at-home exercises through Obe Fitness, ClassPass, or Fitness Blender or I’ve included my favorite FREE at-home workouts that I do more often than not.
- Helping out: If you’re feeling helpless, there are a few things you can do.
- Volunteer your time: Offer to do chores (e.g. yard work) for those that are unable or run errands for those that are at a higher risk of infection.
- Write or donate: You can do things from the comfort of your home such as writing letters to those who may be quarantined (senior centers, oncology or cardiac floors of a hospital, etc.) or donating to Feeding America, Meals on Wheels, or other similar organizations.
- Shop online or buy gift cards: Many establishments will suffer by doing their part in temporarily closing, but you can still shop online or buy gift cards to help support them.
- You can dedicate your time to non-medical tasks such as delivering medicine to patients, restocking shelves, placing orders and cleaning through Good Sam App.
- Tip the service industry
- Find a project
