Living with Taylor Swift’s Biggest Fan

“I remember the day as clearly as I remember the lyrics to every Taylor Swift song. Rewind to the year 2010. Taylor has launched her first headlining tour, and her stop in Denver happens to fall on my birthday. I remain unaware of the fact that every girl in the car has a ticket to the show until someone has a slip of the tongue. Tension briefly hangs in the air, but then the discussion of outfit ideas and hairstyles covers up the awkwardness. I feel myself physically shrink while reality sets in. I realize that somehow I did not earn an invitation from my ‘friends’ to the concert of my dreams on my 16th birthday. A new kind of pain hits me like a wall, and right then I became Taylor Swift’s biggest fan. I love her because she would never want anyone to feel the way I felt that day. The year is now 2014, and my love for Taylor has never been stronger. I find a way to sneak her into most conversations, my room might as well be a Taylor Swift museum, the kids I nanny are forced to sing along to her music in my car, I make sure to update everyone I know on all things Taylor, and I drove over 1,000 miles to see her concert last summer after spending two weeks making posters and costumes. Not only do I devote myself to loving Taylor on a daily basis, but I also devote myself to living my life by some of her wisest words, ‘no matter what happens in life, be good to people. Being good to people is a wonderful legacy to leave behind.'” -Megan B. a.k.a. my one and only sister

I received this email on October 5, 2014 with a follow-up text from my sister asking me to edit her submission to win a contest to meet Taylor Swift on The Ellen Show. Little did I know, I would be holding back tears to get through it. This broke my heart. Not only because one year before we drove from Denver, CO to Wichita, KS to see Taylor Swift’s Red tour and did not make it into Club Red, but because I continue to watch my sister live this Taylor Swift quote in her day-to-day life without question.

This year, we will be seeing Taylor Swift in Denver for her 1989 tour. Now just one month away, my sister is already planning our outfits, posters and plan of attack for the day (my mom is either planned to be a cheerleader or rapper – she doesn’t even know it yet). Her hopes are so high on meeting her hero. If I could have anything in the world it would be 1) that my sister was not at risk of blood clots every day of her life, 2) that my mom didn’t have heart disease and 3) that my sister got to meet Taylor Swift and Ellen DeGeneres. Unfortunately, I only have the power to do everything I can to make #3 a reality.

As Taylor’s biggest fan, my sister tells me that Taylor is an active member on Tumblr and social media. My hope is that this somehow gets into the right hands to help me make her dreams come true.
